Stops you in your tracks.

Do you have that one song that just completely stops you in your tracks when you hear it?  The first few bars play and you’re transported back in time and the memories are so vivid that you swear, for those few seconds that you’re right back where you were when that song meant something huge.

Back when Matt and I were together for the first time back in the summer of 2004, we went up to Six Flags a ton.  We weren’t realy adults yet, so we had our summers to play and we did.  We made the three hour trip quite often with a group of friends, but this time we were going to see a concert.

Back on 04′ I was just starting to listen to country music and Sara Evans was playing at the park.  We had season passes, so the concert was free.  I was so excited, I remember talking about going up to the concert forever.  When we got up there, we took our seats in the bleachers, stage left.  She sang a ton of songs and I remember sisng along and giggling, all the while holding Matt’s hand.  I was so grateful to have him there with me, he had just gotten back from a deployment and it was like a dream come true.

She did a cover of “I Could Not Ask for More”, you know that cheesy song by Edwin McCain?  Yeah, that one.  Except with her voice, it was just so beautiful.  She hadn’t even made it to the chorus yet when Matt hopped over the railing and motioned for me to do the same.  I thought he was insane, but I was crazy about him, so I did it anyway.  So there we were staning in this big open area with nothing around us except the audience on either side and Sara Evans in front of us. (This situation had the potential to be ALL KINDS of awkward, right?)

He grabbed my hand and spun me around.  Before we knew it, I was down there with him dancing in front of everyone.  We danced for the whole song, it was one of the sweetest things i’ve ever experienced in my life.  Cheesy, maybe.  But ever since then, and in all the years that we weren’t together… It never failed, every single time I’d hear that song on the radio or on my ipod it would stop me dead in my tracks.  I’d listen to those first few notes and I was transported back to right then.  Even when I thought I didn’t love him anymore, or we were nothing more than friends… that song just sent this rush over me and I still get a little giddy whenever I hear it.

I’ve never been the type to be like “Oh, this is OUR SONG”.  I always thought that was kind of dumb, but this?  This is OUR song.

What’s YOUR song that brings you back, that stops you dead in your tracks?

Cute!!! mine would be God Blessed the Broken Road. I have heard that song so many times and it always resonates with me. The most significant time I heard it was the first morning I woke up in Australia. I had traveled by myself for the first time and I ended up halfway across the world. I was doing a Contiki tour for 2 weeks with people I had never met. I was so excited for my adventure to begin, but nervous and scared at the same time. When my alarm went off and this song began, I knew that I was never alone. God is always with us, Blessing us all along the way.

that’s so effing cute. seriously.

I’m not sure if I have a song that stops me in my tracks, but If We Hold On Together from the Land Before Time holds a lot of meaning to me.

I love that song! Jay and I don’t really have a song. We have several songs from when we were sneaking around with each other. I have a 30 song playlist on my iPod that reminds me of our secret ling weekends and the late nights we had driving around town in the jeep talking and getting to know each other.

“The Way I Do” by Marques Hernandez fit our situation at the time and that brings me back every time.

Btw are you still accepting love stories?

I love that story, Rachel.

There are two similar songs for me, “I’m Here Without You” by Three Doors Down and “Happy Ending” by Mika. But both remind me heartache and healing, so kind of not my favorite memories, haha.

Well, if I remember correctly, that very song was OUR song… me and my boyfriend when I was 15. I don’t even remember why.

Steve and I never had a song, though there are definitely a few that remind me of him. “Say Goodbye,” by Dave Matthews, “Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney, and just about any New Found Glory song.

Those were two of the maybe…. four significant relationships I’ve had and no… never really had a “song.”

Maybe that’s a good indication these weren’t THE guys? I don’t know. But I still smile and think of years past whenever I hear any of those 2001-2006 songs. I’m glad we’re where we are now, but when we were more? We were pretty damn good.

That’s such a cute story! Whenever I hear songs by Saving Jane that happens to me. I used to listen to one of their cd’s all the time the summer of 2007. I had just had two surgeries from ruptured appendix complications and was still really sick so hearing those songs helps me see how far I’ve come.

I’ve never announced a song in a relationship, but there are definitely a few that throw me back. “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds is one of those that I love/hate at the same time now, as is anything by Nat King Cole. (What? We were sophisticated music lovers at the age of 16.)

Hmmm, I don’t know if I have one that totally takes me back to an exact moment but I know my dad does have one. He remembers the exact song that played when he learned his mom died. Even know, 20 years later he can’t handle listening to it.

the song that gets me every time i hear it is “your song” by elton john. it takes me back to senior year of high school, with my first ever boyfriend and the movie Moulin Rouge had just come out. we would write notes back and forth during school, and he would always sign at the bottom “how wonderful life is, now your in my world”

le sigh.

I decided that my song with Eddie is “My Life Would Suck Without You” by Kelly Clarkson, for no other reason than the fact that it describes out breakup-get-back-together so well, and that was so pivotal in giving us a great relationship now. It’s his ringtone :)

Kenny Chesney’s “I Go Back” stops me in my tracks, though – how could it not? You listen to country, you know what I mean!

“I’ll Back You Up”, from DMB’s 7/12/00 show at Giant’s Stadium. They hadn’t played it in concert in forever. I took a girl I was seeing to the show, and it pretty much typified our relationship. Ahh..young love, lol.

This is such a great story!! I love how songs can create very vivid memories and play such an important roles in everyone’s lives.

I have so many songs that are woven into certain milestones, holidays and ordinary moments.

Regina Spektor’s “On the Radio.” It reminds me of my time and Italy, then the fall following that, including a nasty breakup. The words took on a new meaning after that.

And it makes me sad that my boy and I don’t really have a song. We danced together the first night we hung out, but I have NO idea what it was to. And I wish I could remember.

that’s sweet. I love that song. I don’t really have a song like that with an ex, but the song “Best Days” by Graham Colton always takes me back to the last weekend of college.
And the song “Life is a Highway” takes me back to the summer of 07…I always stop when I hear it, and if I close my eyes, I forget that i’m not on the porch, cup in hand, laughing with my roommates.
